Flying through Shanghai Pudong International Airport and need a smoke break? Good news - PVG has designated outdoor smoking areas across both terminals. Here is everything you need to know about where to light up at one of Asia’s busiest airports.
Important Policy Update
Since October 2016, all indoor smoking rooms at Shanghai Pudong Airport have been permanently closed. This applies to both PVG and Shanghai Hongqiao Airport. You will only find outdoor smoking areas now, but there are plenty of them spread across the terminals.
Terminal 1 Smoking Areas
International & HK/Macau/Taiwan Departures:
Outdoor smoking area beside Gates 68 & 69 in the International Departure waiting area
Near Gates 213-216 in the International Departure Lounge
Domestic Departures:
Gates 200-203 area in the Domestic Departure Lounge
Remote Boarding Gates 220-221 domestic departure waiting area
Terminal 2 Smoking Areas
Near Gate D73 - take the escalator up to the 2nd floor and look for signs next to Café Deco. The smoking point is located behind the café.
Additional designated outdoor areas are marked with clear signage throughout the terminal
Satellite Terminals
PVG has satellite terminals (S1 and S2) connected via train from the main terminals:
Satellite S1: Head downstairs near Gates 501/502 for the smoking area
Satellite S2: Similar setup - look for the area near Gates 601/602 downstairs
Before Security / Landside
If you have time before checking in or after you land, step outside the terminal building. Designated smoking spots are located near the terminal entrances - just look for the signage or ask airport staff for directions.
Tips for Smokers at Shanghai Pudong
China has strict no-smoking rules for indoor public spaces, so expect all smoking areas to be outdoors
Allow extra walking time - the airport is massive and smoking areas may require a bit of a trek from your gate
Signs are in Chinese and English - look for the universal smoking symbol
Airport staff are generally helpful if you need directions
