Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is one of the three major airports serving the New York metropolitan area. EWR is completely smoke-free indoors with no post-security smoking areas. Smokers must exit the terminal to use designated outdoor zones. This guide explains your options.
Smoking Policy at Newark Airport
Newark Liberty International Airport is a completely smoke-free facility. Smoking and vaping are prohibited in all terminals, including gates, lounges, restrooms, and all indoor areas. E-cigarettes are treated the same as regular cigarettes.
Designated Outdoor Smoking Areas
There are 10 designated outdoor smoking zones at Newark Airport, located outside each terminal. All smoking areas are at least 25 feet from any entrance or exit.
Terminal A
The smoking area is located outside the building, at least 25 feet from the main entrance and exit doors.
Terminal B
Outdoor smoking zones are available outside Terminal B, clearly marked with signage.
Terminal C
Terminal C (United Airlines hub) has outdoor smoking areas at the arrivals and departures levels.
Important: No Post-Security Smoking
There are no smoking areas beyond security at Newark Airport. If you need to smoke, you must:
Exit the secure area to the outdoor smoking zone
Go through TSA security screening again to re-enter
This can add 15-30+ minutes depending on security wait times, so plan accordingly.
Tips for Smokers at Newark Airport
Smoke before security – Once you’re through TSA, you cannot smoke without exiting and re-screening
Allow extra time – If you need to smoke during a layover, factor in security wait times
25-foot rule – Stay at least 25 feet from entrances when using outdoor smoking areas
Fines apply – Smoking in non-designated areas carries a $25 fine, plus potential legal consequences
Tobacco purchases – You can buy cigarettes at Duty Free shops, but cannot use them inside the terminal
